Located in the Western Part of Africa, Ghana covers an area of nearly 240,000 km2 and is the second most populous country in the region. Since 1993, Ghana has maintained a relatively free and stable government and performed well in healthcare, economic growth and human development.

However, due to its high population, of which approximately 58% are youth, the country is plagued with high rates of youth unemployment, school dropout, teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, a lot of young people are moving from rural areas to the cities in search of better opportunities.

HCA has been active in Ghana since May 2019. During Phase I (2018−2022), it provided a grant to one pilot project in the cities of Tamale and Ashaiman.

At the start of Phase II, the HCA Global Team commissioned a scoping study to explore opportunities for further expansion in Ghana. The study identified two relevant intermediary cities that face challenges in adolescent health and wellbeing – Ho and Sunyani. In November 2022, projects started in both cities with HCA support.
